Since the formation of the NMMA as the NM Music Industry Coalition, Micky has been a sponsor, offering a space for the program to hold workshops in his store, Grandma’s Music & Sound, providing backline instrumentation to the awards show every year, loaning instruments for performance and shelling out sponsorship money each year.
Beginning in 1983, Micky and his wife Patty opened a music store in Albuquerque that catered to musicians of every stripe; from the amateur to the professional. Seeing the rise of digital music a few years later, Micky added electronic instruments like synth drums, digital keyboards and computer software designed to help the musician and composer. From there, the business took off. All of his staff were talented musicians and spoke the language of music.
Over the years, Grandma’s hosted brilliant national artists like bassist Nathan East, fusion artist Brian Auger, Rascal Flatts drummer and music director Jim Riley and more, all at no cost to their customers. Micky, a talented jazz bassist and guitarist himself, retired in 2017 to concentrate on jazz while wife Patty further developed her talent for photography. Grandma’s music was purchased by store manager Ryan Clement who has move the store online.
The Eric Larson Endowment at UNM provides unrestricted funds for juniors or seniors who have chosen music or the recording arts as their major and have maintained a 3.0 GPA. Eric Larson was co-founder of the New Mexico Music awards and passed away in 2005. The New Mexico Music Awards contributes annually to the scholarship fund. To donate, go to ericlarsonendowment.com
